Beta-Alanine in Memodyne: What 40 mg Does and Does Not Do

Written by the Memodyne editorial team · Last updated · 7 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerBeta-alanine is an amino acid sold mainly for workouts. The body uses it to build carnosine, which helps muscles handle hard effort. Sports studies used 4 to 6 g a day. Each Memodyne capsule lists 40 mg, about 1% of 4 g, so the well-known tingling side effect is unlikely. No study links this dose to memory.

Beta-alanine is the fifth line on the Memodyne Supplement Facts panel. It sits after the two arginine forms and the two citrulline forms. Like them, it has its own printed amount and two asterisks (**), meaning no Daily Value has been set.

It is also the smallest of the amino acids on the label. The full lineup is on our ingredients page.

Basics

What is beta-alanine?

Beta-alanine is an amino acid your body can make by itself. It is not one of the building blocks of protein. Its main job is to team up with another amino acid, histidine, to form a small molecule called carnosine.

Carnosine is stored mostly in muscle. During a hard sprint or a heavy lift, acid builds up in working muscle. Carnosine helps soak up some of that acid, so the muscle can keep going a little longer.

Beta-alanine is the part that runs short. That is why sports formulas sell beta-alanine instead of carnosine itself.

Evidence

What does the research on beta-alanine show?

The clearest summary comes from a position stand by the International Society of Sports Nutrition (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015). It says 4 to 6 g a day, taken in doses of 2 g or less, for at least two weeks raises the carnosine in muscle. Most of the benefit showed up in hard efforts that last about one to four minutes.

That research is about athletes and exercise. It does not cover memory, focus or clarity. We found no study that tested beta-alanine for memory in healthy older adults.

Tingling

Why does beta-alanine cause tingling?

Tingling is the side effect people know beta-alanine for. It often feels like pins and needles on the face, neck, ears or hands. It usually starts soon after a large dose and fades on its own. The sports position stand lists it as the only reported side effect (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015).

The feeling comes from nerve endings in the skin reacting to a quick rise of beta-alanine in the blood. It is linked to the size of a single dose. That is why athletes split their daily amount into smaller doses.

  1. Gram-sized doses at once

The range where tingling is reported in sports studies.

  2. 2 g or less per dose

The dose size used in sports studies, split through the day, to keep tingling down.

  3. 40 mg at once

One Memodyne capsule. That is about one fiftieth of a 2 g dose.

What this means for one capsule

At 40 mg, tingling is unlikely. Unlikely is not the same as impossible, and bodies differ. If you notice a new feeling you cannot explain, stop and tell your doctor. Our article on beta-alanine tingling goes deeper.

Formula

Why is beta-alanine in Memodyne?

The label does not say. Beta-alanine is a common partner for arginine and citrulline in pre-workout powders. Memodyne uses the same three amino acids, in much smaller amounts, and sells the mix as a Cognitive Support Formula.

One more detail matters. The brand pack's own ingredient list names six items and leaves beta-alanine out. The label lists seven lines, and beta-alanine is one of them. When the two disagree, we go by the label, which you can read on our Supplement Facts page.

Honest note

Honest note: beta-alanine and memory

Nothing in our sources shows that beta-alanine helps memory, and no study of Memodyne has been published. At 40 mg, the amount is also far below what raised muscle carnosine in athletes.

That does not make the line harmful or pointless to list. It means the honest way to read it is as a small extra amino acid, not a memory ingredient. The arginine and citrulline lines carry most of the formula's weight; see L-arginine and L-citrulline.

Safety

Is beta-alanine safe?

At sports doses, the main thing people notice is tingling. Our sources do not list serious problems for healthy adults in the studied range. Long-term data in older adults are thin, so the usual care applies.

Tingling

Known at gram doses. Unlikely at 40 mg. It fades on its own when it happens.

Other lines matter more

Arginine and citrulline may lower blood pressure and add to blood pressure drugs, nitrates and ED pills.

Allergy signs

Hives, swelling of the lips or face, or trouble breathing need care right away. Call 911 for trouble breathing.

The blood pressure caution comes from the other amino acids in the capsule (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Our side effects page puts every line and warning in one place.

Food

Where else do you get beta-alanine?

Most people get some every day without thinking about it. The body makes a little on its own. Food adds more, mainly from meat, chicken and fish, which contain carnosine and related compounds.

Vegetarians and vegans tend to have less carnosine in their muscles. That is one reason some plant-based athletes use beta-alanine powders.

Everyday sources of beta-alanine

  • Beef and pork: carnosine in the muscle meat
  • Chicken and turkey: rich in carnosine-type compounds
  • Fish such as tuna: another common source
  • Your own body: makes a small amount every day
Use

How do you take Memodyne with its beta-alanine?

There is nothing special to do for this line. The label says to take one capsule a day with an 8 oz glass of water, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. Do not take extra capsules to reach a sports dose. The label says not to exceed the recommended dose.

If you already use a pre-workout powder, check its label too. Many contain gram doses of beta-alanine, which dwarf the 40 mg here. Our how to use page covers timing, missed doses and what to log.

FAQ

Beta-alanine FAQ: questions people ask

What does beta-alanine do?

It helps your muscles build up carnosine. Carnosine buffers the acid that builds up during hard, short bursts of exercise, which is why sports formulas use it.

Does beta-alanine help memory or focus?

Our sources do not show that it does. The research on beta-alanine is about muscle and exercise, not memory in healthy adults.

Why does beta-alanine make my skin tingle?

Tingling, often on the face, neck or hands, is the known side effect at sports doses. It is tied to larger single doses, which is why sports studies split the daily amount into doses of 2 g or less.

Will Memodyne make me tingle?

It is unlikely. Each capsule lists 40 mg, which is about one fiftieth of a 2 g single dose. Tell your doctor about any new symptom anyway.

How much beta-alanine is in Memodyne?

The label lists 40 mg per capsule, on its own line with no Daily Value. At one capsule a day, that is 40 mg a day.

Is the beta-alanine tingling dangerous?

The position stand from sports researchers calls tingling the only reported side effect, and it fades on its own. A new rash, swelling or trouble breathing is different and needs care right away.

How much beta-alanine should I take a day?

Sports studies used 4 to 6 g a day, split into doses of 2 g or less. There is no Daily Value, and you do not need to take any for health.

Is beta-alanine safe for older adults?

Our sources report no safety signal beyond tingling at sports doses. If you have a medical condition, the label says to ask a physician before any supplement.

What foods have beta-alanine?

Meat, poultry and fish contain carnosine and related compounds, which supply beta-alanine. The body also makes a small amount on its own.

Why is beta-alanine missing from the Memodyne ingredient list I saw?

The brand pack's ingredient list names six items and leaves it out. The label image prints it as a seventh line, and the label wins.
