Is Memodyne Safe? Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Written by the Memodyne editorial team · Last updated · 7 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerAt the label amounts, side effects from Memodyne are expected to be uncommon.

The main point to watch is blood pressure: arginine and citrulline may add to blood pressure drugs, nitrates and ED pills. Stomach upset is possible, and anyone with a past heart attack should ask a cardiologist first.

Overview

Is Memodyne likely to cause side effects?

For most healthy adults, side effects are expected to be uncommon at these amounts. The doses are small next to those used in research. Still, no safety study of Memodyne itself has been published, so “uncommon” is not the same as “none”.

The label lists seven lines, and each has its own printed amount. That makes it possible to check each ingredient one by one. The table below does that.

Side effects reported in the linked sources, set against the amount printed on the label.
IngredientPer capsuleKnown side effects at research dosesWhat it means here
L-arginine400 mg (two forms)May lower blood pressure; stomach upset and bloating at larger doses (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine)Small dose; blood pressure effects still worth asking about
L-citrulline200 mg (two forms)Possibly safe short term; may lower blood pressure (WebMD, L-citrulline)Small dose; same blood pressure caution
Beta-alanine40 mgTingling skin at 4 to 6 g a day (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015)Tingling unlikely at about 1% of 4 g
Niacin7.5 mg NEFlushing, burning or itching at 30 mg or more of nicotinic acid (NIH ODS, Niacin)Flushing unlikely; about half a day's need
Calcium18 mgThe upper limit for adults is 2,000 to 2,500 mg a day (NIH ODS, Calcium)Under 2% of a day's need
Capsule and fillersHypromellose, vegetable stearate, silicon dioxideCommon capsule materialsNo known concern at these amounts
Dose check

How do the label doses compare with the doses in studies?

Most known side effects show up at doses many times larger than one capsule. The bars show each amount next to a research dose. A short bar means a small share of what was studied.

L-ArginineAbout 12%

Memodyne lists 400 mg a capsule (two forms combined)
Research: 3.3 g a day in the memory trial (Mone et al., 2022)

Beta AlanineAbout 1%

Memodyne lists 40 mg
Research: 4 g a day, the low end in sports studies (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015)

NiacinAbout half

Memodyne lists 7.5 mg NE
Research: 16 mg NE a day for men (NIH ODS, Niacin)

Memory evidenceNo product study

No study of Memodyne has been published. The one arginine memory trial we found was small, short and used about 8 times more arginine. (Mone et al., 2022)

Interactions

Which medicines may interact with it?

Blood pressure medicine, nitrates and ED pills are the main ones. Arginine is used by the body to make nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. Citrulline is turned into arginine. Drugs that lower blood pressure or work on the same pathway can add to that effect.

Interactions named in the linked sources for arginine and citrulline. Not a complete list.

Low blood pressure

What are the signs of blood pressure dropping too low?

Dizziness and lightheadedness are the most common, especially when you stand up quickly. Some people also feel unusually tired, see blurred vision or feel faint.

If you notice these signs after starting a new supplement, sit or lie down. Stop the capsules and call your doctor. If you faint or have chest pain, call 911.

Dizzy on standing

Stand up slowly. Hold a rail or chair. Tell your doctor if it keeps happening.

Unusual tiredness

Note when it started and whether it follows your capsule. Bring the notes to your doctor.

Fainting or chest pain

This is an emergency. Call 911 right away.

Heart history

Why does a past heart attack call for extra care?

Because of one trial that went the wrong way. In VINTAGE MI, people took L-arginine for six months after a heart attack. It did not improve their hearts or arteries. More deaths occurred in the arginine group, and the trial was stopped early (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006).

That trial used far more arginine than one capsule holds. Memorial Sloan Kettering still notes arginine may raise risk after a heart attack (MSKCC, Arginine). If you have had one, talk with your cardiologist before you take any arginine product.

Common worries

What about flushing, tingling and stomach upset?

Flushing and tingling are unlikely; stomach upset is possible. Each has a clear reason.

  1. 01

    Niacin flush: unlikely

Flushing, burning and itching start around 30 mg of nicotinic acid. Each capsule lists 7.5 mg NE, well below that and below the 35 mg upper limit (NIH ODS, Niacin).

  2. 02

    Beta-alanine tingling: unlikely

Tingling skin is the known side effect at 4 to 6 g a day. The capsule lists 40 mg, about 1% of 4 g (Trexler et al., ISSN 2015). Unlikely is not impossible, so note it if it happens.

  3. 03

    Stomach upset: possible

Any capsule can unsettle some stomachs, and the label has you take it before food. Larger arginine doses are linked to stomach pain, bloating and loose stools (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). If it bothers you, ask your pharmacist about taking it nearer the meal, and stop if it persists.

Emergencies

When is a symptom an emergency?

Some signs need help right away, whatever the cause. Do not wait to see whether a supplement is to blame.

Stroke signs: call 911

Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, seeing or walking. A sudden, severe headache. These can be signs of a stroke. Call 911 right away and note the time the signs began (CDC, Stroke signs).

Memory problems that build slowly are different, but they still deserve a visit. Memory loss that disrupts daily life should be checked by a doctor. Some causes, like low vitamin B12 or a medicine side effect, can be treated (NIA, Memory problems and aging). A supplement should never delay that check.

If it happens

What should you do if you think you have a side effect?

  1. Stop the capsules

You can stop at any time. There is no need to taper off a supplement like this.

  2. Call your doctor or pharmacist

Bring the bottle so they can see every line on the label.

  3. Write down what happened

Note the symptom, when it started and what else you took that day.

  4. Tell the seller

Call the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 with your order ID and the lot number on the bottle.

You can also report a problem with any supplement to the FDA through its MedWatch program. Reports help regulators spot patterns across products.

Buy safely

Could a look-alike website sell you something different?

It is possible, and it is a safety issue as well as a money issue. MalwareTips reported memo-dyne.com as “High Risk” (MalwareTips, memo-dyne.com scan) and getmemodyne.com as “Moderate Risk” (MalwareTips, getmemodyne.com scan). A capsule from an unknown seller may not match the label shown here.

Before you order, compare the label with our Supplement Facts page. The buyer check page walks through how to spot a look-alike site.

FAQ

Memodyne side effects: questions people ask

Does Memodyne have side effects?

Side effects are expected to be uncommon at these small doses, but they are possible. The most likely are stomach upset and, in people on blood pressure medicine, dizziness from low blood pressure.

Is Memodyne safe?

It has not been tested as a product, so no one can call it proven safe. Its ingredients are common amino acids and vitamins at small doses, and the label warns certain groups to ask a physician first.

Can Memodyne lower blood pressure?

It might, a little. Arginine and citrulline can lower blood pressure at gram doses, so people on blood pressure drugs should ask their doctor first.

Does Memodyne cause niacin flush?

It is unlikely. Flushing usually starts around 30 mg of nicotinic acid, and each capsule lists 7.5 mg NE of niacin.

Does the beta-alanine in Memodyne cause tingling?

Tingling is unlikely at 40 mg. It is the known side effect at sports doses of 4 to 6 g a day, which is 100 to 150 times more.

Can Memodyne upset your stomach?

It can for some people. If it does, ask your pharmacist whether taking it closer to a meal is fine, and stop if it keeps happening.

Can I take Memodyne with nitroglycerin?

Not without your doctor's approval. L-arginine taken with nitroglycerin might make blood pressure drop too low.

Does Memodyne interact with Viagra?

It may add to the blood pressure effect of ED pills like sildenafil. Ask your doctor before combining them.

Can Memodyne cause headaches?

Headache is not a well-known effect at these doses, but any new headache is worth noting. A sudden, severe headache with confusion or weakness needs a 911 call.

What should I do if I have a reaction to Memodyne?

Stop taking it and call your doctor. For trouble breathing, swelling of the face or stroke signs, call 911.
