L-Arginine and Memory: What Human Research Says and How Memodyne's Dose Compares

Written by the Memodyne editorial team · Last updated · 8 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerHuman research on L-arginine and memory is thin. We found one small trial: 72 frail older adults with high blood pressure took 3.3 g a day for 4 weeks, and their thinking-test scores differed from placebo. We found no review showing memory gains in healthy people. Memodyne lists 400 mg of arginine, about 12% of that trial dose.

The idea

Why do people link arginine to memory?

People link arginine to memory because of blood flow. The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide, a gas that helps blood vessels relax. The brain needs a steady blood supply, so the idea sounds sensible.

Citrulline enters the same story. The body turns citrulline into arginine. In healthy volunteers, citrulline by mouth raised blood arginine levels more efficiently than the same amount of arginine (Schwedhelm et al., 2008).

A sensible idea is still only an idea, though. The chain below shows each step, and where the proof runs out.

The trial

What did the 2022 arginine memory trial find?

The clearest human study we found was published in 2022 (Mone et al., 2022). Researchers enrolled 72 frail older adults who also had high blood pressure. Some took L-arginine and the rest took a placebo.

The arginine group took 1.66 g twice a day, so about 3.3 g a day. The trial lasted 4 weeks. At the end, scores on a thinking test differed between the two groups.

Why the group matters

Frail older adults with high blood pressure are a specific group. Their blood vessels may respond differently from those of a healthy 55-year-old. A result in one group does not carry over to everyone.

  • 3.3 gof L-arginine a day, split into two doses
  • 4weeks of follow-up

Limits

What are the limits of that trial?

This trial is a starting point, not an answer. It has several limits that come from its design. Each one makes the result less certain.

Limits of the 2022 arginine trial

  • Small: 72 people is too few to rule out chance with confidence
  • Short: 4 weeks says nothing about months or years of use
  • Single-blind, not double-blind: not everyone involved was kept unaware of who took arginine
  • Narrow group: frail older adults with high blood pressure, not healthy adults
  • One test battery: a score change is not the same as easier daily life
  • Not repeated: we found no second trial that confirmed the result
Reviews

Is there a review showing arginine helps memory?

We found no systematic review showing that arginine or citrulline improves memory in healthy people. A review pools many trials. It is the kind of evidence health agencies lean on, and it does not exist here.

Reviews do exist for blood pressure. Across 11 trials, arginine at 4 to 24 g a day lowered systolic pressure by about 5 mmHg (Dong et al., 2011). A review of arginine and citrulline trials found modest drops at gram doses, with results that vary (Khalaf et al., 2019).

For dementia, the picture is plain. The NCCIH says direct evidence that supplements can prevent Alzheimer's disease or other dementia is lacking (NCCIH, Supplements for cognitive function). It also advises talking with a health care provider instead of delaying care.

Dose

How does Memodyne's arginine dose compare?

Memodyne lists 400 mg of arginine in each capsule. That total comes from two lines: 200 mg of arginine base and 200 mg of arginine AKG. Part of the AKG line's weight is the carrier, not arginine itself.

Memory evidenceNo product study

No study of Memodyne has been published. The one arginine memory trial we found was small, short and used about 8 times more arginine. (Mone et al., 2022)

Honest note

No study of Memodyne itself has been published. Its amounts are far below the tested doses, and the one memory trial was small. The label calls it a "Cognitive Support Formula", but those words were not evaluated by the FDA. Our how it works page explains the formula's idea in more detail.

Citrulline

What about citrulline and memory?

Citrulline is studied mostly for blood pressure and exercise. Those studies used gram doses. We found no human trial testing citrulline on its own for memory.

Memodyne lists 200 mg of citrulline, split between an HCl form and a malate form. Some of that weight is the salt partner. Our L-citrulline page covers each form, and the L-arginine page does the same for arginine.

Habits

What helps memory, according to health agencies?

Health agencies point to everyday habits, not pills, as the steady base for brain health. None of these is a cure. Together, they cover the factors doctors can actually measure and change.

  1. 01

    Sleep on a schedule

Regular, enough sleep is tied to clear thinking the next day.

  2. 02

    Move most days

Walking, gardening or dancing keeps the heart and blood vessels working.

  3. 03

    Keep blood pressure in range

Check it, and take prescribed medicine as directed.

  4. 04

    Look after hearing

A hearing test is simple, and hearing aids help many people stay engaged.

  5. 05

    Stay in touch

Talking with friends and family keeps the mind busy in a good way.

  6. 06

    Review B12 and medicines

A doctor can check for low B12 and for medicines that cloud thinking.

Our brain health basics guide explains each habit in more depth.

Safety

Who should ask a doctor before taking arginine?

Arginine may lower blood pressure. That matters if you already take medicine that does the same. Mayo Clinic notes that with nitroglycerin, sildenafil or blood pressure drugs, arginine might make pressure drop too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

Heart attack history matters too. In the VINTAGE MI trial, people took arginine after a heart attack. It did not help, more deaths occurred in the arginine group, and the trial stopped early (Schulman et al., JAMA 2006).

Check first

Ask your doctor before trying arginine if you take blood pressure medicine, nitrates or ED pills, or if you have had a heart attack. Our article on nitric oxide supplements and blood pressure pills explains why.

Reading studies

How can you read the next arginine headline?

New headlines about arginine and the brain will keep coming. A few quick questions help you judge each one. Use them for any supplement study, not just this one.

Six questions for reading a supplement study headline.
Question to askWhy it matters
Were the people like me?Results in frail or sick groups may not apply to healthy adults.
How many took part?Small studies can show a result by chance.
How long did it last?Weeks of data say little about years of use.
What dose was used?A product may hold a small fraction of the tested amount.
Was there a placebo and blinding?Without both, hope and bias can shape the scores.
Has anyone repeated it?One result is a lead; repeated results build trust.

When should memory changes come first?

Research questions are interesting. Daily life comes first, though. If memory changes are new, getting worse or causing problems at home or work, see a doctor. Some causes are treatable.

FAQ

Arginine and memory FAQ

Does L-arginine improve memory?

It has not been shown in healthy people. One small 2022 trial in frail older adults with high blood pressure saw different thinking-test scores than placebo, but it was short and single-blind.

How much L-arginine was used in the memory study?

The trial used 1.66 g twice a day, about 3.3 g a day, for 4 weeks. That is roughly eight times the arginine listed in one capsule of this product.

Is L-citrulline good for the brain?

No human study we found shows citrulline improves memory. It is studied mostly for blood pressure and exercise, at gram doses.

Does nitric oxide help memory?

Nitric oxide helps blood vessels relax, and the brain depends on good blood flow. That link is a theory for memory, not a proven result in supplement users.

Can arginine prevent dementia?

There is no good evidence that it can. The NCCIH says direct evidence that supplements prevent dementia is lacking, and we found nothing different for arginine.

Who took part in the arginine memory trial?

The 72 people were frail older adults with high blood pressure. Results in that group may not apply to healthy adults or to younger people.

Is 400 mg of arginine in Memodyne enough to matter?

No one has tested it. The amount is about 12% of the memory-trial dose and a small fraction of blood pressure trial doses, which ran from 4 to 24 g a day.

Is it safe to take arginine for memory?

Short-term use is common, but arginine may lower blood pressure. Ask a doctor first if you take blood pressure medicine, nitrates or ED pills, or have had a heart attack.

What actually helps memory as you age?

Health agencies point to steady habits: good sleep, regular activity, blood pressure control, hearing care and time with other people. A doctor can also check B12 and your medicines.

Curious about Memodyne after the research?

Memodyne is one capsule a day with every amount printed on the label. It is not a memory treatment. Ask your doctor first if you take blood pressure or heart medicine.
